Birthstone for the month of October: OPAL

Opal is derived from the Latin word "opalus," meaning precious jewel. Opal was also called "Cupid Paederos" by the Romans, meaning a child beautiful as love. Ancient monarchs treasured Opals for their beauty and for their presumed protective powers.

This Gemstone contains up to 30% water, so it must be protected from heat or harsh chemicals, both of which will cause drying and may lead to cracking and loss of iridescence. Opal must also be guarded from blows, since it is relatively soft and breaks easily.

There are two types of Opal: Common & Precious

Color & Varieties:
  • Black Opal ~ from the Lighting Ridge region of Northern New South Wales, is the most rare and valuable Opal.
  • Boulder Opal ~ occurs in the boulder opal belt, an area between the New South Wales border and Northern Queensland.

Sapphire is named after the Greek word "Sapphirus", meaning blue, it symbolizes wisdom and purity that's is why it's been a favorite of priests and kings, and been prominent among the British Jewels that is why Prince Charles chose this as the engagement stone for Princess Diana and later on Prince William chose this for Princess Katherine for her Engagement Ring.

There is a legend that the Ten Commandments were inscribed upon tablets made of sapphire and that gives sapphire a royal place among gemstones.

Gem is designated for the 5th, 23rd and 45th wedding anniversary, a Star Sapphire is typically given on the 65th wedding anniversary.

Birthstone Jewelry

BIRTHSTONES

Birthstones as defined are precious or semi-precious stone traditionally associated with a particular month or sign of the zodiac believed to attract a good fortune, bring prosperity and take away evil.

I have read that* wearing birthstones first gained popularity in Poland in the fifteenth century. Other suggested everyone wear the birthstone for each month. Wearing them is seen as signs of power, wealth and luxury. To get the most out of it, individuals needed to own an entire set of twelve gemstones and rotate them monthly.

Different cultures and tradition have different beliefs and understanding in regards to wearing their own birthstone. Mostly they do not even like the color of their own true birthstone. You can wear them in different forms of jewelry such as ring, pendant or earring.

There are modern and traditional birthstones. Here are the lists of modern and traditional according to birth month.
