August Birthflower: Gladiolus

Gladiolus from the latin word the diminuitive of Gladius, because of their long sword shaped leaves.
they are one of the most popular flowers you will find planted in gardens because of their beauty, fragrance and the easiness of growing.

Species: 260 Species, 250 are native to sub-Saharan Africa, 10 species are native to Eurasia

Description: Gladiolus vary from very small to the spectacular giant flower spikes in commerce.

Color: pink to reddish or light purple with contrasting markings, or white to cream or orange to red.

Means: Sincerity & Symbolizes strength of character

Fun and interesting fact: The Gladiola was adopted by actress Dame Edna Everage and was often seen in pictures and publicity shots for her. Morrissey has done the same since he was with the band The Smith's back in the 1980's.
