OPHIUCHUS "the snake holder" not official yet?

A few days ago the new addition to the Zodiac Family the 13th sign "OPHIUCHUS" made a huge buzz all over the net and media. People who cares are not happy about it, many of us believed in the powers of astrology and adding another zodiac sign made it confusing, Although the sign "Ophiuchus" has been known about since ancient time, many of us are still not familiar because it is not included in standard astrological zodiacs and this left us confused. Most of us are dismayed and made us thought, is this our alter ego?

Who is Ophiuchus?

According to Wikepedia Ophiuchus is a large constellation located around celestial equator. Its name is from the Greek "serpent-bearer", and it is commonly represented as a man grasping the snake that is represented by the constellation Serpens.

The earliest mention of the constellation is in Aratus informed by the lost catalogue od Euxodus of Cnidus (4th century BC). According to Roman era mythography, the figure represents the healer Asclepius, who learned the secrets of keeping death at bay after observing one serpent bringing another healing herbs. To prevent the entire human race from becoming immortal under Asclepius' care, Zeus killed him with a bolt of lightning, but later placed his image in the heavens to honor his good works.

Not official yet?

According to this website thsnews.com:

According to astrologers, the new Ophiuchus zodiac sign was promoted by Parke Kunkle of the Minnesota Planetarium Society, who as we had reported revealed the change in zodiac signs in an interview. The change it seems has not been recognized or accepted by any organization.

In a statement by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, it has been revealed that “the International Astronomical Union, an internationally recognized body regarding astronomical matters, hasn’t made an official announcement on the change of zodiac signs.” The press relations manager, Sul Ah-chim also added that if such a change was to happen, “the decision should be made by the official body. For now, the news about the introduction of the 13th zodiac sign has originated from an astronomer, therefore, it’s more like his personal suggestion, not an official decision by the union.”

For others, who have faced an identity crisis after the change in zodiac signs was revealed, the new astrology chart is only applicable for people born after 2009, and for those born before that, the zodiac signs remain the same as what they were born even if the change gets recognized by the international organizations.

There are some hot debates online which are:

1) This change will affect only those born after 2009
2) There will be no influence of change in western world
3) Earth’s movement does not determine Astrological signs
4) 12 Months relate to 12 Zodiacs and adding 13th one means 13th month must be added

Statement from Prof. Parke Kunkle, Minneapolis Community and Technical College and Minnesota Planetarium Society board member:

”In science we deal with a long tradition of fact based investigation. We are not in the business of interpreting the purported relation between the positions of planets and human affairs.

“The Earth spins and, like a toy top, the spin axis moves around, pointing in different directions. Today, Earth's spin axis points toward the pole star, Polaris. Around 3000 BC Earth's spin axis pointed toward Thuban. Wait 26,000 years and the north star will again be Thuban. Astronomers call this motion of the spin axis precession. About 130 BC, Hipparchus noticed that the Earth's spin axis had changed directions, so astronomers and astrologers have known about the Earth's precession for over 2000 years.

Changes happens we may like it or we may not, Change may be good, may be bad. Does it really matter if our Zodiac Signs switched? maybe, but we can only answer it for ourselves because we are the only person who knows exactly who we are.
